Then Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, because we have sworn both of us in the name of the Lord, saying, ‘The Lord shall be between me and you, and between my offspring and your offspring, forever.’” And he rose and departed, and Jonathan went into the city.

…a harmful spirit from God rushed upon Saul, and he raved within his house while David was playing the lyre, as he did day by day. Saul had his spear in his hand. And Saul hurled the spear, for he thought, “I will pin David to the wall.” But David evaded him twice.

David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, and that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hand.”

As we continue through the book of First Samuel, we come across the story of David’s anointing as future king over Israel and how God looks at the internal (the heart) and not the external as man tends to do

And Samuel Said, “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices,
as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice…” 1 Samuel 15:22

As we continue through the first book of Samuel, Chapter 14, witness the rise of Jonathan’s bravery, and the beginning of the fall of Saul as God’s chosen leader of his people.

As soon as he had finished offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came. And Saul went out to meet him and greet him. Samuel said, “What have you done?”

Continuing through the first of Samuel’s books, Chapter 12, we see again how our God is a God who keeps His word:

v.22 “For the Lord will not forsake his people, for his great name’s sake, because it has pleased the Lord to make you a people for himself. “
